The Drought Ends
Sunday 2nd May 2010
24 hour rainfall accumulation (mm) 1st - 2nd May 2010
24 hour rainfall accumulation (mm) 1st - 2nd May 2010

April saw a prolonged period of negligable rainfall. In fact, a period of 21 days between 8th-28th (inclusive) saw 0mm recorded at our station in Staplehurst, officially declaring a Drought status (15 or more consecutive days with no rainfall).

Thankfully the drought has ended with a scattering of showers on Saturday and more prolonged and heavy rainfall on Sunday. However, the rain poured all day long across most parts of the region on Sunday (2nd), giving some very high rainfall totals, especially in the southeast of the region. Such quantities of rainfall has caused localised flooding in places, as a result of high surface run-off on dry, baked soils.

Rainfall varied greatly across the region, but generally there were accumulations of 10 - 25mm across a wide portion of the region, and locally as much as 45mm. The map to the right shows the rainfall accumulations between 20:00BST Sat 01 - 20:00BST Sun 02 May 2010, with the table below displaying the total accumulated rainfall at various stations across the region.
